Disasters Are No Match With These Tips

Disaster happens. It’s an inevitable part of life. Some areas are more prone than others, but that doesn’t mean some people, like those living in Cullman, AL, are immune to disasters. The only solution is to prepare adequately for the best results.

1. Weather Radio

You should have a radio that you can use without electric to listen to weather updates and warnings. Because you may end up without power, make sure you have a battery-operated radio and spare batteries. Try for one that has the option to plug it in or run it via batteries. If you have a generator, you can always plug it in.

2. Keep Your Phone Charged If You Know Bad Weather is Coming

If the news reports bad weather is coming, immediately put your phone on the charger and leave it on there. You don’t want your phone to die and have no communication in the event something happens while the electric is out. You may want to have a small generator to charge your cell and run a portable fridge.

3. Escape Ladders

If you’re sleeping upstairs when a fire breaks out, it may block off your escape route to get downstairs and outside. You should have an escape ladder in each bedroom where someone sleeps. This allows you and your family to get down to the ground in the event you’re unable to get downstairs. You should have an escape plan implemented for each area of your home. It doesn’t hurt to have multiple options if possible. Inform your kids of the escape route.

4. Get a 72-Hour Kit

You should have an emergency kit with enough supplies for 72 hours. Some items to include are as follows: food like canned goods, granola bars, beef jerky and freeze dried food. The kit should have water in it as well.
