3 Things to Think About with RV Insurance

If you want to explore the Southeast and the rest of the country, Alabama is a great location from which to start, especially if you have a recreational vehicle or RV. With an RV, you and your family can easily tour the lakes and rivers and forests that surround the south or drive to the nearby mountains. Our state is filled with more than 100 RV parks where you and your family can park your vehicle to camp out and spend the night.

Before you purchase a new RV and hit the road to explore, however, be sure you understand the insurance requirements for these vehicles.

1. Your RV must meet certain requirements. To qualify for RV insurance, your vehicle must have the following:

  • A cooking appliance
  • A refrigerator(s)
  • Bathroom facilities
  • A drinkable water supply system
  • An electrical system of 110 to 125 volts

2. When you have an RV, you will be required by law to have insurance minimums. Your liability minimums must cover at least:

  • $25,000 for death or bodily injury per person in an accident
  • $50,000 for death or bodily injury per person in an accident
  • $25,000 for property damage liability coverage

This insurance is separate from your primary vehicle insurance.

3. You should consider additional insurance. In addition to the required liability insurance, there are additional insurance options that RV owners in Alabama should consider, including:

  • Collision Coverage: This will cover your RV if it is damaged due to an accident.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: This will ensure the cost of repairs is covered should your vehicle be vandalized, or should it be dented, scratched, or majorly damaged during a storm.
  • Contents Insurance: This will protect the expensive items that you often keep inside your RV, including electronics, should they be stolen.
